Michele Simonato Universiteit Utrecht
Michele Simonato is a post-doctoral researcher at the Utrecht Centre for Regulation and Enforcement in Europe (RENFORCE), Utrecht University. He holds a Ph.D. on victims’ rights and criminal procedure from the University of Genoa, Italy, and he regularly lectures on European and international criminal law, comparative criminal law, and fundamental rights.
His main research interests lie in the field of EU criminal law, asset recovery, and enforcement of EU policies. He has participated in numerous international research projects on various topics, such as the prevention and settlement of conflicts of jurisdiction, the establishment of a European Public Prosecutor’s Office, the investigative powers of OLAF, and the transfer of prisoners in the EU.
In particular, during the last few years, he conducted a post-doctoral research project on asset recovery in the EU at the University of Luxembourg. During that project, he was a visiting researcher at the Georgetown University Law School (Washington, DC). He published several articles on freezing of confiscation of assets, and co-edited the volume ‘Chasing Criminal Money: Challenges and Perspectives on Asset Recovery in the EU’ (Oxford, Hart, 2017).
